Night 2 of the Ramayan shows your child that real courage means standing beside someone who is scared.
नानी की रामायण, भाग दो — ताड़का का जंगल और शिवजी का धनुष

Hear Naani tell it
The story
Ask a small child what bravery looks like and they will often describe someone big and strong. Naani offers a better picture tonight: two brothers who stand side by side, and a hero who warns before he acts and protects people who cannot protect themselves. The idea your child carries to bed is simple and usable at school tomorrow — when a friend is scared, being next to them is the bravest thing you can do.
The story picks up where Episode 1 left off, in the thick forest. A roar; the trees shake; Ram steadies his bow and Lakshman comes and stands beside him. It is Tataka, a powerful rakshasi who frightens the rishis. Vishwamitra says the people of this forest must be protected. Ram first warns her to stop, but she begins hurling huge stones. One arrow, and Tataka's end comes. Naani recalls Tulsidas ji's chaupai, "Ekahin baan pran hari leenha", and explains it softly: with one arrow Ram ended her, and then, in mercy, sent her to his own abode. The birds come back to the forest.
Naani saysराम ने धनुष सँभाला। लक्ष्मण उनके पास आ खड़े हुए।Ram steadied his bow. Lakshman came and stood beside him.
Naani saysराम ने पहले उसे रुकने की चेतावनी दी।Ram first warned her to stop.
The story in pictures
Frames from Naani’s telling, in story order — the pictures your child sees while she speaks.

At the ashram the rishis begin a great yajna, and Ram and Lakshman promise to guard it, keeping watch for days. One morning a strange sound fills the sky: Maricha and Subahu have come to spoil it. Ram's arrow without a point sends Maricha flying a hundred yojanas across the sea — he survives, and never comes back. A fire arrow stops Subahu, and Lakshman drives the others back. The yajna is completed and Vishwamitra blesses the brothers. Here Naani pauses and asks your child: if your friend were scared, what would you say to give them courage? She listens and answers.
Naani saysवह बच गया… पर फिर कभी इस आश्रम की ओर नहीं आया।He survived… but he never came near this ashram again.
On the road to Mithila the brothers find a lonely ashram and a stone that is not a stone. It is Ahalya, turned to stone by an old curse. At the touch of Ram's feet she stands again, smiling.
Naani saysराम के चरण छूते ही… अहल्या मुस्कुराती हुई फिर से खड़ी हो गईं!The moment Ram's feet touched the stone… Ahalya stood up again, smiling!
Then Mithila itself: green fields, tall gates, flower garlands and bright flags. In King Janak's palace lies Lord Shiva's great bow, which even mighty heroes cannot lift, and Janak has made a promise — whoever strings it will marry Sita. Ram looks at the bow from afar. Can he lift it? Naani saves that for tomorrow.
The value this story teaches
Four-to-seven-year-olds meet fear every week — a loud dog, a dark corridor, a new child in class who will not let go of the teacher's hand. They also notice when another child is scared, and do not always know what to do with that feeling. Learning that you can help just by being there, and by saying something kind, turns a bystander into a friend.
This episode puts that picture in front of your child again and again. The first thing Lakshman does when the forest roars is come and stand beside his brother. The brothers keep watch over the rishis for days. Ram warns Tataka before he acts and uses an arrow without a point on Maricha. Then Naani asks your child directly what they would say to a frightened friend — so the courage becomes theirs, not just Ram's.
How to talk about it at bedtime
- Ask your child: when the forest roared, where did Lakshman go and stand?
- Try: "Agar tumhara dost darr raha ho, to tum use kya kahoge?" Then share a time someone stood by you.
- Wonder together about Ahalya: how do you think she felt when she could stand and smile again?
When to pick this story
- When your child has told you a friend at school is scared or being left out
- After a night your child was frightened, to remind them that brave people stand together
- On the second night of the Ramayan, after Ram and Lakshman leave Ayodhya with Vishwamitra
Try asking your child
After the story, or the next morning on the way to school:
- What did Ram do first, before he used his bow against Tataka?
- What did Ram and Lakshman promise the rishis about the yajna?
- If a friend at school is scared, what could you say or do to help them?

Parents also ask
Who was Tataka (Tadka) in the Ramayan?
Tataka, also spelt Tadka or Tadaka, was a powerful rakshasi who frightened the rishis of the forest near Vishwamitra's ashram. In Naani's telling Ram first warns her to stop; when she hurls rocks, one arrow ends it, and Naani recites Tulsidas ji's chaupai about Ram's mercy in sending her to his own abode. The moment is a few calm lines.
Who was Ahalya, and why was she a stone?
Ahalya was the wife of the sage Gautam. In the Ramcharitmanas she had been turned to stone by a curse, and stood up again when Ram's feet touched the stone on his way to Mithila. Naani tells it in four short lines: a stone that was not a stone, an old curse, Ram's touch, and Ahalya standing again, smiling.
Is the Tataka part too scary for a small child?
It is kept short and gentle. There is a roar, falling leaves and a few stones, and the end is told in a single sentence followed by a verse about mercy. Most of the episode is about guarding the yajna, Ahalya and the beautiful city of Mithila, and it ends with a soft good night.
