Hear Naani tell it

The first 0:36 of Naani Ki Ramayan 11: Vanar Sena Ka Bada Abhiyan, in her own voice — exactly what your child hears at bedtime.
The moment she turns to your child. Mid-story, Naani stops and asks a question — then listens to the answer and replies by name.

The story

Children at five often think helping means being the biggest or the fastest. This night gently turns that around. The hero of the search is an old bird who cannot even fly, and Naani's closing thought is one your child can carry: everyone has a gift for helping. There is forgiveness in it too. When Sugriv forgets his promise, Ram does not scold him; he hugs him and says he is as dear as Bharat.

The rains end, and Ram waits at his cave. Lakshman is angry, but Ram only asks him to remind their friend. Hanuman reminds Sugriv first, Sugriv is startled into action, and soon vanaras come swinging and leaping from every hill until the valley is full. Sugriv sends them north, east and west, and to the south he sends young prince Angad with Hanuman and Jambavan, the old king of the bears. Before they go, Ram takes off his ring. "Give this to Sita, so she knows I sent you." Hanuman takes it in both hands, like a treasure.

Naani says
हनुमान ने अंगूठी दोनों हाथों से ली— जैसे खज़ाना! राम ने सिर पर हाथ रखा।
Hanuman took the ring in both hands, like a treasure! Ram placed his hand on his head.

The southern party searches forests, rivers and mountains. Days pass, and there is no water. Then Hanuman sees wet swans flying out of a cave; inside is a hidden garden with a lotus pond and sweet fruit, and a holy woman who feeds them and tells them to close their eyes. When they open them, they are at the sea.

Naani says
हनुमान पहाड़ पर चढ़े। नीचे एक गुफा— उससे गीले हंस उड़कर निकल रहे थे!
Hanuman climbed the hill. Below was a cave, and wet swans were flying out of it!

Angad sits down, sad: a month gone, and no news. He speaks of brave Jatayu, and an old vulture comes out of a cave. He is Sampati, Jatayu's elder brother. Hearing how Jatayu fought Ravan for Sita, he weeps and offers the sea's water in his brother's name. Then he tells his own story: long ago the two brothers flew towards the sun. Jatayu turned back from the heat; Sampati, in his pride, flew closer and his wings burned. A kind sage told him his wings would return the day he helped Ram's messengers.

Naani says
“मैं सम्पाती हूँ— जटायु का बड़ा भाई। मेरा भाई कहाँ है?”
"I am Sampati, Jatayu's elder brother. Where is my brother?"

Sampati looks across the sea and sees golden Lanka, and Sita sitting in the Ashok garden, sad, remembering Ram. Naani recites the chaupai, the vanaras leap for joy, and Naani pauses to ask your child what they would say to Sampati. She listens and replies to what your child says. Then Sampati's new wings grow and he flies away like Garuda. But the sea is so vast its far side cannot be seen. Who will cross it? Hanuman looks at Ram's ring, and says nothing.

Naani says
सम्पाती ने दूर समुद्र के पार देखा। “वहाँ! त्रिकूट पहाड़ पर सोने की लंका!”
Sampati looked far across the sea. "There! Golden Lanka, on Mount Trikut!"

The value this story teaches

Between four and seven, children start to notice who is good at what, and some quietly decide they are not good at anything. Working together is the antidote: a team needs the strong and the clever, but also the one who simply sees what others miss. A parent can help a child feel that their small gift matters.

This night shows it in a way a child remembers. A huge army sets out, the strongest heroes search for a month, and still it is an old bird with burnt wings who finds Sita, just by looking. Hanuman reminds, Sugriv sends, Angad leads, Jambavan comforts, Sampati sees. Each one helps in his own way, and your child gets to thank Sampati in their own words.

How to talk about it at bedtime

  • Ask your child: Sampati could not fly, but he still helped. How did he help?
  • Try: "Tumhara madad karne ka hunar kya hai?" — and enjoy the answer.
  • Talk about how Ram forgave Sugriv when he forgot his promise. Has your child ever forgotten something, and been forgiven?

When to pick this story

  • When your child feels they are not good at anything
  • After a friend or sibling has let them down, to talk gently about forgiving
  • Night 11 of the Ramayana, after Ram aur Sugriv ki dosti

Try asking your child

After the story, or the next morning on the way to school:

  1. What did Ram give Hanuman to take to Sita?
  2. How did the thirsty vanaras know there was water in the cave?
  3. Sampati could not fly. How did he still help?

Parents also ask

Who was Sampati in the Ramayana?

Sampati was a great vulture and the elder brother of Jatayu, who fought Ravan to save Sita. In the Ramcharitmanas, Kishkindha Kand, he lives old and wingless on a cliff by the southern sea. When the vanaras speak of Jatayu, he comes out, learns of his brother's death, and with his far-seeing eyes tells them Sita is in Lanka.

Why did Sampati lose his wings?

Naani tells it as the Ramcharitmanas does: when they were young, the two brothers flew towards the sun. Jatayu could not bear the heat and turned back; Sampati, in his pride, flew closer and his wings were burnt. A kind sage told him his wings would grow back the day he helped Ram's messengers, and in this episode they do.

Is this episode suitable for young children?

Yes. There is no fighting in it. The sad moment, Sampati learning that his brother has died, is told gently with a tear and a prayer by the sea, and the episode ends with joy, a soft cliffhanger about crossing the ocean, and a good night.
